Funko have unveiled their Pop lineup for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, and among the familiar faces from The Force Awakens, we have some new additions.
If you don't want to know anything at all about Episode VIII do close this post now.
Still here? Let's get going then! We'll kick off with the familiar faces (just in case those who want to leave let their eyes wander a little too low!)
Not only are these first Pops familiar faces, they're essentially repackaged Pops from The Force Awakens. Note the low series numbers on them. In the 2 years since Episode VII was released, we've had tons of Star Wars releases - Rogue One, Clone Wars, Rebels and then of course 2 years worth of Smuggler's Bounty releases too. So when we get to the new pieces, you'll see a significant leap in those series numbers...
Now we're starting to get somewhere. Here we have Chewbacca wielding a small, bird-like creature. He looks quite happy about it, too. Rey's style has changed here with hair hanging loose and gone is her staff, in favour of a more... elegant weapon. The one to watch though, is Finn. Now, sure as shit the First Order were not going to take him back into the fold following his desertion. And there was no way he'd get a promotion upon being accepted back, so we can only assume that his appearance here as a First Order Officer shows us perhaps a little bit of Resistance espionage...
Time for another familiar face of sorts, and you just know this one is going to be hugely popular. BB-8 is a fine compliment to R2-D2 as the 'young', cheeky droid and this Pop figure really captures that. It's like we've caught BB-8 in the middle of a bit of mischief. Downloading plans... uploading viruses... hacking the CCTV to spy on lady droids... who knows?
Next up we have Poe Dameron looking very heroic here in a jacket that wouldn't look out of place on Han Solo. He's even got a little, sort of pissy-looking blaster in his hand. And I'll bet you anything you like that he didn't draw first.
Does the lack of flight suit imply that we're going to see a much more grounded Poe Dameron in the next movie? Or will we get some pilot variants later?
Go on then, let's get a peek at Luke Skywalker. Here he is, resplendent with his heavily tobacco-stained moustache and beard. Evidently there wasn't much to do on that island beyond getting a massive smoke on. And what's that he has there? A massive pipe of course. Maybe this whole galactic conflict will end once he sits down with his nephew and introduces him to the greenery.
Speaking of Luke's nephew, here's another fan of patricide. Kylo Ren's outfit has some lovely pattern detail to it, but his lightsaber is the real highlight here. Translucent red vinyl in uneven-looking shards gives the real impression of that thing thrumming with power. By comparison to the other, clean lightsaber blades, Kylo Ren's has a much more angry, crackling behaviour to it. Almost like an extension of his tortured psyche. Funko have done a tremendous job on that weapon and Kylo Ren's facial scar breaks up what could otherwise just have been another bland human Pop face.
On to a new face. And yeah, it looks like Porg is the small creature carried by the Chewbacca Pop above. Is it a pet? Is it an important character? All I know is, this thing looks fresh out of Final Fantasy VII or Pokemon, or something. There's a chase figure of Porg too. But we won't know til the movie's out in December whether we should give a shit about that or not.
Supreme Leader Snoke has only been seen in his holographic form on screen and in his Pop incarnation. The scar tissue and collapsed jaw features look great. And that hand posture? It looks familiar to me. Like he's saying, "Join me..."
Hopefully now the closer look at this character will lay to rest all those stupid theories that Snoke is Darth Maul, or Jar-Jar Binks. All I know is, when you learn who he really is, you are going to lose your mind.
Little is known about the next character, Rose. All that's been revealed so far is that she works maintenance for the Resistance. She's not out to be a hero, but she is apparently going to be dragged into the adventure in a major way. But, I wonder, on whose side?
On to another droid and it looks like BB-8 might just have himself an arch enemy. With his black plate detail, it seems a good bet that BB-9E is in the service of the First Order.
Sticking with the First Order, let's take a look at the last handful of standard Pops revealed so far.
Now these really interest me. The First Order Executioner has that ominous black stripe over the helmet to make him stand out from his brothers. Like Kylo Ren, however it's the weapon that really catches the eye. With what appears to be a crackling energy battle-axe blade wielded to the right, this figure will really get to those in box collectors, who won't be able to see the axe head for the packaging. But the very presence of a First Order Executioner strongly suggests that someone is going to be captured... could it be that another long-standing character is about to get the chop?
Finally, the Praetorian Guard appears to fulfil the role of the Emperor's red-robed Imperial Guard. It stands to reason that these are Snoke's honour guard. I've seen a couple of exclusive variations on this figure, with different weapons, which suggests to me that we might see these guys in action. I will share those pics soon.
